30 Days of TV – Day 29

Day 29 – Current t.v show obsession

You’d probably think I’d choose Galactica again, but no, alas, that would be my previous obsession. I haven’t actually watched it since I burned through the DVDs. Nor have I thought seriously about watching it again—that’s a long damn series to go through.

There are scant few shows that I’m currently “obsessing” over, and most of them are pretty lame obsessions: “yeah, maybe I’ll boot up Hulu Plus and watch some Daily Show.” It’s kind of hard to count a show as an obsession when I leave it on the back-burner, waiting for Netflix streaming to add season six of Doctor Who or season two of Archer. There are two shows, however, that I can qualify as obsessions… if you get technical about it.

USA is just about the ideal cable network in terms of TV show quality (HBO doesn’t count because it costs more), and Burn Notice is just about their ideal show. Combine a whole lot of spy-mystery action, throw in a ton of explosions and car chases, gunfights and family drama, a weird-ass relationship between the protagonist and his trigger-happy on/off girlfriend, and Bruce Campbell as the wingman. Oh, and the weird “build it yourself” science geek hour, only focusing on spy gadgets and explosives. Bam, you have Burn Notice.

The show does have a few downsides—sure, it’s a bit “client of the week,” and they have a habit of storming identical McMansions—but this is a damn good show. I saw the first season live, since it started right after I got out of class, but have been struggling to keep up with the series since. Luckily, the local channels have reruns, but I’ve watched more of it via DVD or my Roku. Watching Micheal slowly uncover the background to this burn notice, namely through the season finales, is great; plus the actors are choice, and the show has enough of a budget to make the action scenes rock.  Easily the best spy-thriller show out there… with the possible exception of Archer.

The other would be How I Met Your Mother; as it’s the new sitcom phenomenon, I can see it roughly twelve times a day, more if I’m visiting someone who has cable or satellite. (It’s on FX and Lifetime, of all things.) Like all sitcoms, it has its plusses and minuses, but it’s catchy and funny enough to be solid daily viewing.  The cast is very well-rounded; the jokes are generally funny, and have a strong geek bias; and it’s got Neil Patrick Harris. I can’t say it’ll win anyone who hates sitcoms to the sitcom cause, but it’s a worthy successor to all those sitcoms about young twentysomethings living and dating and fostering hilarious hijinks in New York City. And unlike Friends, I haven’t seen all the syndicated episodes twelve times over.
