30 Days of TV – Day 23

Day 23 – Most annoying character

1.) Janice from Friends. Jesus. Wept. I mean, I know she’s supposed to be annoying—that’s the whole damn joke, that Chandler is such a pessimistic loser that his low-self esteem means he’ll always come crawling back to Janice—but I think the writers took it too far. She shows up constantly… well, only once or twice a season, but it gets a bit much by the time Ross dates her once. Though, that one was nearly worth it, as he’s whiny enough to drive Janice (of all people) away. Nearly. God, I hate this character. It’s like a bad Fran Drescher joke that begins to forget that, in the grand scheme of life, it’s merely a joke.

2.)

Again, another character brought in to be laughably annoying—at least to Jerry—but man, I really, really don’t like the character. Not the same passionate hate as I have for Janice, but it’s close. And it got worse when Wayne Knight was brought in as Kristen Johnston’s love interest on 3rd Rock From The Sun. No offense to the guy, but I really only liked him when he was being eaten by dinosaurs.

3.) Stargate: SG-1 was almost entirely directed by Peter DeLuise, the son of Dom DeLuise… whom you probably know as “that big guy with the beard in every Mel Brooks movie ever made.” Needless to say, in one of the early seasons (when it was on Showtime), they managed to get Dom on the show for one of the one-off joke episodes. It’s one of those “SG-1 gets infected by something,” episodes, so only SG-1 can see and hear Dom DeLuise yammering at them. His sole purpose in life is to annoy the loving shit out of the characters, and by proxy, the audience.

4.) Every Irish person in Season 2 of Heroes. The way these guys are written, I’m surprised nobody called out the Heroes writing staff as racist or something. They’re portrayed as dumber than the average Cobra Viper. Dumber even than those villains whose sole purpose in life was to steal Hostess Twinkies. “You jerk, Peter Petrelli! Where did you put all of our stuff that you stole, before you went back into the cargo container you looted, locked yourself in, and handcuffed yourself to a pipe! We’re onto your fake amnesia story, now tell us where our stuff is!” Sigh. Morons.

5.) Urkel.

6.) Maya and Alejandro from Heroes. I liked the idea of building up new heroes for season two, and I’ll stick to my “the writer’s strike screwed up a lot of things that could have went somewhere” story. But these characters were doomed to suckitude from the beginning. (Damn, two Heroes mentions for the same day. That says something…)

7.) Fran Drescher, because now the list becomes recursive as I started with Janice, both cut from the same cloth. Only instead of cloth, it’s an annoying  New Yorker stereotype.
