30 Days of TV – Day 20 & 21

I realize that now, having already written/posted this, I forgot to mention my other competition for days 20 and 21: Pushing Daisies. A weird, quirky show with a weird, quirky relationship. And a weird, quirky kiss. It was probably too bizarre for viewers, with its retro-’50s aesthetic and “piemaker solves murders with dead girlfriend because he can bring people back to life” premise, but I really wish TV execs would take more chances and do more shows like this. It’s a blast of fresh air that makes up for the ponderous monotony of most television shows, both in plot, premise, and execution.

Day 20 – Favorite kiss

So, yeah, this is another of those categories for real diehard TV fans, or fans of a number of genres I don’t watch, or just don’t cut it as real amazing moments. I mean, there are a lot of shows out there with “major kiss moments” that are over-hyped a little, simply because those characters were written for each other. (I mean, c’mon, I realize the last half of Friends had the continual plot thread all about “will Ross and Rachel get back together?!?!,” but who the hell else would they end up with?)

So, now we’re starting to get into cop-out territory here—and again, I said the second half of this list will be Galactica-heavy—but my choice is Adama and Roslin. The big one was during The Oath, hence why I remember it so well (see day 6), right after the big mutiny, where both of them are a little worried for the other’s survival. You’ve got two people who have gradually been putting aside their inhibitions (largely due to their positions), and are developing a real relationship. For most of the “we could have died” situations, they put on the brave face of President/Fleet Commander, but for this one, they just throw that out the window. And right there, bam, the elderly folk of the cast get the big on-screen smooch. Finally, in the final damn season of the show, they actually get to openly show their emotions.

(I can’t tell you how close I came to putting down “that time Archie Bunker got kissed by Sammy Davis Jr.,” but I managed to talk myself into making a real choice.)

Day 21 – Favorite relationship

Again, Roslin and Adama, Galactica 2004. The series did a great job building their relationship up, from their early grating as President and Fleet Commander; you really get a good feel that these characters, and overcome all they’ve went through—the destruction of the colonies, yeah, but also the fact that they’re old and single and alone. Even with the weird Lee-Kara relationship bits, which becomes the double-weird Lee-Dualla-Billy versus Kara and Anders, the big relationship of the show is between Roslin and Adama. Mainly because they’re the most important people in the fleet, and are portrayed by some damn fine actors.

I’ve been on the edge about Day 21 for a while now, debating between two choices. Galactica eventually won out, but I still think Firefly is worth mentioning. The whole Mal-Inara relationship is an odd duck—it’s more of an anti-relationship in how they’re always bickering, denying that they even like each other, when it’s painfully apparent to the viewers (and the other crew) that there’s some real attraction there. Kind of like kids in elementary school bickering and fighting, but only because they don’t want to admit they like each other for the rest of the class to know. So we get a lot of great dialogue (read: arguments) between them. Plus, Inara’s hot (goes with the whole “being a Companion” thing). It’s a solid relationship without being too girly, though the reason Galactica won out is because it actually had a chance to develop and conclude. Damn you, Fox.
