30 Days of TV – Day 16

Day 16 – Your guilty pleasure show

No, no, see, there’s actually a reason for this.

See, growing up in Michigan with relatives on both sides working for the Big Three, I was indoctrinated into the auto culture from an early age. Mom’s dad was an experimental engineer for Chrysler (back before they merged with Daimler for a brief stint), and he used to foist off various work freebies on me. I think I have ten years’ worth of Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep poster calendars in the basement, the ones with a single big car photo and three calendar months. Plus all the various MOPAR memorabilia, stacks of prototype photos and car-plus-glamor-girl shots and whatnot. Plus, the years where I didn’t spend a few months camping in the Upper Peninsula… yep, vacationing in the Detroit Suburbs of all places, which is inundated with classic car shows from about June until a few weeks after the Woodward Dream Cruise.

So, Top Gear. A show so popular with the British that the History Channel found the need to adapt it for the American public. (Apparently BBC America showing it eight times a day wasn’t enough.) The format is roughly the same, though I kinda lean towards the British version for the hijinks they pull, while at the same time, the American version actually includes cars I’ve seen firsthand. The show follows a simple formula. Well, two, actually. Either it’s a montage of car-related reviews and comparison tests with snarky commentary, or it’s a lengthy special where the cast does a chain of related wacky events, or a single, long wacky event. Like racing boats and cars and trains, or whatever else someone can come up with. Or having subcompacts compete in a game of ice hockey.

It’s really hard to not like a show that, in their own words, is “on the cutting edge of cocking about.” In cars.
