Day 14 – Favorite male character
The Doctor from, obviously, Doctor Who.
A cheat, I know: one character portrayed by eleven (and counting) actors. And because the show is the longest-running science-fiction TV show, with (currently) 777 episodes, a bunch of specials, and a pair of feature-length movies. Also because I haven’t seen all of the Doctors, mostly the first one (the gruff old sod, back when the show was just campy BBC television and not yet Doctor Frakking Who, media phenomenon and British cultural icon), and the last three Doctors, thanks to PBS and BBC America.
I never got a good enough feel of Christopher Eccleston’s portrayal to really like his Doctor; oddly jovial and witty, while also melancholy at the same time. Like the majority of fans, David Tennant is my top-pick for Doctor. His Shakespearian pedigree gives him a leg to stand on in the acting department, and his fast-talking, light-hearted Doctor with a propensity for babbling is rounded and endearing.
Needless to say, his replacement as the Eleventh Doctor needed to fill big shoes, and I think Matt Smith’s done a damn good job of doing so. He’s similar to the first two, on paper—fast-talking, witty, manic at points—yet it’s all done in his own unique way, a childlike wonder to every situation he’s throw in. He’s also on top of the game, and highly logical—his manic pontificating is his way of working out a solution—and he’s got some great signature phrases (“Come along, Pond!” and “[blank]s are cool” come to mind). Give it another few years and Smith could easily surpass Tennant as best Doctor; I rank him pretty high already.
