Day 05 – A show you hate
Hrm. This is actually a hard one. Generally, if a show’s not up my alley, I don’t watch it—Glee, Gray’s Anatomy, Off the Map—and I can’t really justify bagging on shows I haven’t seen yet. Bagging on reality TV is low-hanging fruit, and I’m not actually sure even the people who watch it really “like” it.
And “hate” is such a strong word. I “hate,” say, most of TV Land’s programming (Green Acres and Petticoat Junction, looking at you) and most of what MTV plays, but not the frothing-at-the-mouth, real hate hate.
So, a potpourri.
The closest I can get is The Cleveland Show. Family Guy came out when I was in high school, and even back then it wasn’t particularly funny; a couple of episodes had some good jokes, but it was roughly a dumber version of The Simpsons. It wasn’t until after Fox cancelled the show—and rightfully so, they already had The Simpsons and King of the Hill and fifty billion other animated “adult cartoons”—that people began obsessing over it and made it into some glorious hyper-exaggeration, inflating the show’s actual humor value as said humor value continued to drop.
Of course, it came back, and that popularity brought us American Dad—which in many ways was better than Family Guy, namely Patrick Stewart, while still having the exact same cast of characters, the same dynamic, etc. It’s Family Guy with a smarter, less-fat male lead, with the smart talking dog replaced by a stupid talking alien, and a few other aesthetic changes. Which then brought us The Cleveland Show, which brought us full-circle back to Family Guy, only in blackface. (E.g., there’s this weird expectation of racism, in that a white guy is making an unfunny version of The Jeffersons.) It’s the same cast. The same rehashed jokes. Only, again, without the smart talking dog as the voice of reason. Seth MacFarlane’s sin is convincing people that his shows are funny; he could shit out five more shows like this, each one continuing the downward spiral, while he laughs his way to the bank.
At one point, someone was wondering if I was into The Big Bang Theory, being a nerd and all, and was surprised when I groaned. The show isn’t nerd humor—that would be The Escapist, by the way, which can still be hit or miss IMO. Instead, Big Bang is a parody of those stereotypical nerds who only exist in the artificial confines of mass media, and when one does spontaneously generate from the ether in real-life, the other geeks and nerds shun them. I’ve seen a couple episodes, and they’re not very nerdy, they’re also a little dated. The last one I saw involved a protagonist’s WoW character getting scammed, and going into a black market gold farmer den to buy his epic loot back, and half the show was explaining how such a thing could be (slash comma and why such a thing should be considered funny). God forbid he had been playing EVE.
While we’re on the subject… I know it’s an overdone nerd staple to rage against G4, but it’s not particularly good. I don’t mind it, but it would be a lot more of a cool gamer channel if it didn’t give out such a heavy product-placement vibe, the same whoring reviews for companies as Gamespot does. Also, sometimes they try too hard.
