30 Days of TV – Day 02

Day 02 – A show that you wish more people were watching

J.J. Abrams thought up the idea for Fringe while working on Star Trek with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—the guys who did the Transformers movie. Abrams is one of those love-hate creators, catching both praise and flak for his past projects (Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, and even Star Trek). Both Alias and Lost became very rocky midway through their lifetimes, and not all fans were appreciable of some developments (such as the endings).

Still, Abrams is a big enough name to attract some major attention with Fringe, and what I’ve seen so far, it’s damn good… all the best parts of Lost and Alias with few of the flaws.

The show deals with a special FBI team that deals with unnatural cases, usually involving fringe science, which are usually solved with more fringe science. In a lot of ways it’s the spiritual successor to the X-Files. Only, with pseudo-science instead of aliens, and the pseudo-science is definitely real, especially when the parallel universe parts show up. And it’s got a lot more horror, in the body horror vein. (Fringe is not for the squeamish). No surprise that X-Files was a key influence, as were Micheal Crichton, the Twilight Zone, and Altered States. And Abrams’ experience with Alias brings a lot to the spy/thriller angle.

For a slick, intelligent show, with a lot of great twists and a strong cast, Fringe has a hard time catching people’s attention. The curse of a good SF show on Fox, I guess, even with its similarities to the X-Files. Fringe viewers and ratings drop with each subsequent season, so Fox moved it to the infamous Friday Night Death Slot. What did the show’s staff do? Made a TV spot parodying the lineup change. Smart move. The show’s been renewed for a fourth season (2011-2012). Now I just need to catch up on season 3 before the 4th starts.
